WBJEE

Overview

The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination, or WBJEE, is conducted once a year by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board (WBJEEB). It is a pen-and-paper (OMR) test held on a single day, usually in April or May, at centres across West Bengal. Candidates write two papers of two hours each: Paper I (Mathematics) and Paper II (Physics and Chemistry). Questions are split into three categories, and two of them carry negative marking.

What WBJEE is used for

• Engineering and technology: B.E./B.Tech seats at state universities such as Jadavpur University, and at government, government-aided and self-financing engineering colleges across West Bengal, including many in and around Kolkata.
• Pharmacy: B.Pharm seats in the state’s universities and colleges.
• Architecture: B.Arch seats, for which candidates must also hold a valid NATA qualification.
• West Bengal domicile: most seats are for West Bengal domiciled candidates; students from other states can compete only for a limited set of seats listed in the information bulletin.

Counselling and seat allotment

Seats are allotted through WBJEE counselling, which WBJEEB runs online in phases after the result. Candidates register, pay the counselling fee, fill and lock their choices of institutes and courses, and can view a mock allotment before the actual rounds. After each allotment round you pay the seat acceptance fee and choose to freeze or float your seat, then get your documents verified at a reporting centre or the allotted institute. Vacant seats left after the main rounds are filled in later rounds. Keep your WBJEE rank card, Class 10 and 12 mark sheets, domicile certificate and, where applicable, category and NATA documents ready.

Important dates

WBJEEB has not yet announced WBJEE 2027 dates, and no 2027 notice was available as of 25 September 2026. For reference, in the 2026 cycle applications opened on 10 March 2026 and closed in early April (after an extension), the exam was held on Sunday 24 May 2026 (Paper I 11 am–1 pm, Paper II 2–4 pm), and results were declared on 18 June 2026 (Shiksha, PW, Testbook).

Eligibility

Passed or appearing in Class 12 (10+2) or equivalent with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects plus one of Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology, Computer Science or Computer Application, and a pass in English. You need at least 45% aggregate in the three subjects (40% for reserved categories). The minimum age is 17 years as on 31 December of the admission year, with no upper age limit except for Marine Engineering.

Most seats require West Bengal domicile as defined in the information bulletin (for example, long-term residence in the state or parents who are permanent residents). Candidates from other states are eligible only for certain seats, such as some Jadavpur University seats. B.Arch aspirants also need a valid NATA score. Syllabus

Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry at the Class 11 and 12 level as set out in the WBJEE syllabus. Based on the 2026 pattern there are 155 multiple-choice questions for a total of 200 marks: Category I questions carry 1 mark (minus 1/4 for a wrong answer), Category II questions carry 2 marks (minus 1/2 for a wrong answer), and Category III questions, which can have more than one correct option, carry 2 marks with no negative marking.
