Overview

Government College of Engineering and Leather Technology (GCELT) traces its roots to the Calcutta Research Tannery, set up in 1919. It was later renamed the Bengal Tanning Institute and then the College of Leather Technology, and in 1994 it moved from Canal South Road in Beliaghata to its present campus in Block LB, Sector III of Salt Lake, the planned township on the eastern side of Kolkata, close to the EM Bypass.

GCELT is a government engineering college affiliated to Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT) and approved by AICTE. It offers three B.Tech programmes: Computer Science & Engineering, Information Technology and Leather Technology, so it suits students interested in either mainstream computing or the specialised leather sector. An M.Tech in Leather Technology is also available. The college lists a boys’ hostel; no girls’ hostel is listed.
