Overview

Jadavpur University grew out of the Bengal Technical Institute, founded in 1906, and was constituted as a university in 1955. Its main campus of about 60 acres lies on Raja S.C. Mallick Road in Jadavpur, south Kolkata, and a second campus in Salt Lake (Bidhannagar) hosts several engineering departments. The Faculty of Engineering & Technology is among the oldest and best-known engineering schools in eastern India, drawing students from across West Bengal.

JU is a state-funded public university with its own degree-awarding powers and is ranked 18th in NIRF 2025 (Engineering). Its B.E. branches include Computer Science, Information Technology, Electronics & Telecommunication, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Metallurgical, Production, Power, Instrumentation & Electronics, Printing, Construction and Food Technology & Biochemical Engineering. It also offers Architecture, M.E./M.Tech and PhD programmes, and hostels are available for students.
