Overview

The Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur, began in 1856 as a civil engineering college and is often described as India’s second-oldest engineering college. Its riverside campus in Shibpur, Howrah, sits next to the Botanic Garden, just across the Hooghly from central Kolkata. In 2014 the old Bengal Engineering college became the first institution to be converted into an IIEST.

IIEST is an Institute of National Importance under the Ministry of Education and is ranked 54th in NIRF 2025 (Engineering). B.Tech branches cover Aerospace, Civil, Computer Science, Electrical, Electronics & Telecommunication, Information Technology, Mechanical, Metallurgy & Materials and Mining Engineering, alongside a five-year B.Arch. The institute also runs M.Tech, M.Sc and PhD programmes, and students can live in campus hostels.
