How the JEE Main percentile to rank calculation works
An NTA percentile tells you what share of candidates scored at or below you. A 98 percentile means about 2% of candidates scored above you. To turn that into a rank, the calculator multiplies the share of candidates above you by the total number who appeared:
Estimated rank = (100 − your percentile) × total candidates ÷ 100
For JEE Main 2026, NTA reported 15,38,468 unique candidates who appeared across the January and April sessions. So a 98 percentile works out to roughly (100 − 98) × 15,38,468 ÷ 100 ≈ 30,770. The rank-to-percentile mode runs the same formula in reverse.

Why your actual rank can differ from this estimate
- Percentiles are calculated shift by shift. NTA normalises scores within each exam shift, so the same percentile from two different shifts does not always mean the same rank.
- Best of two sessions. For students who took both sessions, NTA uses the better score. The final rank list is built from these best scores, not from one session alone.
- Ties. Candidates with the same NTA score are separated by tie-break rules, which can shift ranks slightly.
- Next year’s candidate count. If more students appear next year, the same percentile will mean a higher (worse) rank. Use the “change the candidate count” option in the calculator to test this.
The estimate is most accurate at high percentiles and less precise lower down. Your category rank is shown on your official scorecard; the calculator does not estimate it because NTA does not publish category-wise score distributions.

Is the percentile the same as the percentage of marks?
No. Percentage is your marks out of the maximum. Percentile compares you with everyone else who took the exam: it is the share of candidates who scored at or below you.
Do I need to clear the qualifying cutoff for NIT, IIIT or GFTI admission?
No. The qualifying cutoff only decides eligibility for JEE Advanced. NITs, IIITs and GFTIs admit through JoSAA counselling based on your JEE Main rank, subject to the Class 12 eligibility rules.
Is this my official rank?
No. It is an estimate. Your official CRL and category ranks are published by NTA on jeemain.nta.nic.in.
