Overview

Shiv Nadar University Chennai (SNU Chennai) began in 2020 on the Kalavakkam campus along Rajiv Gandhi Salai (OMR), about 20 km south of Chennai near Thiruporur in Chengalpattu district. It shares this campus with the well-known Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar (SSN) College of Engineering. From the 2026–27 academic year SSN is being merged into the university as its SSN School of Engineering, so new engineering students now join SNU Chennai, while SSN batches admitted earlier complete their degrees under Anna University.

SNU Chennai is a private state university created under the Shiv Nadar University Act, 2018 of Tamil Nadu. SSN College of Engineering, whose courses have moved to the university, was ranked 47 in the NIRF 2025 Engineering ranking; the university has no separate engineering rank. B.Tech branches are AI and Data Science, Biomedical, Chemical, Civil, Computer Science (plus Cyber Security and IoT tracks), Electrical and Electronics, Electronics and Communication (plus VLSI Design), Information Technology and Mechanical. Students choose either campus hostel or college transport.

B.Tech admission is no longer through TNEA; applicants take the university’s own SNU Chennai Entrance Exam (SNUCEE) and then a faculty interview, and a very small number of seats go to JEE Main candidates at the 90th percentile or above, who move straight to the interview. No. From 2026-27, SSN's engineering courses are offered by the SSN School of Engineering of Shiv Nadar University Chennai, which admits through its own SNUCEE test and interview.
