Overview
Indian Institute of Technology Dharwad (IIT Dharwad) was established in 2016, mentored in its early years by IIT Bombay, and first ran from the campus of the Water and Land Management Institute in Dharwad. It has since moved to its permanent campus at Chikkamalligawad on the outskirts of Dharwad, in the Hubballi–Dharwad twin-city area of north Karnataka.
IIT Dharwad is an Institute of National Importance placed at NIRF 2025 Engineering rank 77. B.Tech programmes include computer science, electrical, mechanical, civil, chemical and biochemical engineering, engineering physics, and mathematics and computing. It is the only IIT in Karnataka, and the campus is residential, with hostels for undergraduate students.
Admission to B.Tech is through JEE Advanced, with seats allotted in JoSAA counselling after candidates first qualify JEE Main. For Karnataka students weighing IIT seats against KCET or COMEDK options in Bangalore, IIT Dharwad is often the closest IIT choice. Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics meeting the JoSAA/IIT performance criterion (75%, or 65% for SC/ST/PwD, or top 20 percentile of the board), and qualification in JEE Advanced after clearing JEE Main.
