Overview
SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) started in 1985 as SRM Engineering College and became a deemed-to-be university in 2002. Its main campus covers about 250 acres at Kattankulathur on GST Road, in Chengalpattu district on Chennai’s southern edge. Potheri suburban railway station serves the campus, so it is a straight train ride from Tambaram and central Chennai. SRMIST also has other campuses in the city, including Ramapuram and Vadapalani. SRMIST is a private deemed-to-be university with a NAAC A++ grade. It is ranked 14th in the NIRF 2025 Engineering list. Its B.Tech programmes cover computer science and many specialisations, along with electronics, electrical, mechanical, civil and other engineering disciplines. The Kattankulathur campus also has a School of Architecture offering B.Arch, as well as medicine and health sciences, management, law and science programmes. There are separate hostels for boys and girls, plus an international hostel.
B.Tech admission is through SRMJEEE, SRM’s own online entrance test, which can be taken in several phases each year. Seats are not filled through TNEA. Applicants need Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics, plus one more science subject, at the aggregate set by the university.
