Example: a CGPA of 8.20 is 82% under the 2022 or 2025 scheme (8.20 × 10), but 74.5% under the 2021 or 2018 scheme ((8.20 − 0.75) × 10). Using the wrong formula changes your percentage by 7.5 points, so check your scheme before you put the figure on a job or higher-studies application.

How VTU calculates SGPA and CGPA
Each course gets a grade point based on your marks. SGPA is the credit-weighted average of grade points in one semester: SGPA = Σ(credits × grade points) ÷ Σ credits. CGPA is the credit-weighted average of your SGPAs across all semesters: CGPA = Σ(semester credits × SGPA) ÷ Σ semester credits. VTU rounds both to two decimal places.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know which VTU scheme I am in?
Your scheme is printed on your marks card and is usually set by the year you were admitted. Lateral entry students follow the scheme of the batch they join in the third semester, so check the marks card rather than going by your joining year alone.
Why do older VTU schemes subtract 0.75?
It is the formula VTU notified for those schemes. From the 2022 scheme onwards, VTU’s regulations use a straight multiply-by-10 conversion instead.
Can I convert SGPA to percentage the same way?
VTU’s formulas are written for your final CGPA. Applying the same formula to one semester’s SGPA gives a reasonable estimate for that semester, but it is not an official figure.
What is 7.5 CGPA in percentage in VTU?
75% under the 2022 or 2025 scheme, and 67.5% under the 2015, 2017, 2018 or 2021 scheme.
Do employers accept this percentage?
Most accept the percentage worked out with VTU’s formula. If an employer or university asks for proof, your college or VTU can issue an official conversion certificate.
