Overview

VIT Chennai was set up in 2010 as the Chennai campus of Vellore Institute of Technology, whose main campus is in Vellore. It sits on Vandalur–Kelambakkam Road in south Chennai. This road links GST Road at Vandalur with Rajiv Gandhi Salai (OMR) at Kelambakkam, so the campus is between the city’s southern suburbs and the OMR IT corridor. The campus is a residential one, and many students live in its hostels.

VIT Chennai is part of VIT, a private deemed-to-be university accredited NAAC A++. VIT’s NIRF Engineering rank is listed for its Vellore campus, and the Chennai campus is not ranked separately. B.Tech programmes include Computer Science and Engineering with AI and machine learning, cyber security, data science and other specialisations. There are also Electronics and Communication, Electrical and Electronics, Electronics and Computer, VLSI, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Civil, Biotechnology and Fashion Technology. The campus also offers B.Sc, BBA, B.Com and integrated law programmes, and it has hostels.

B.Tech admission is through VITEEE, VIT’s own entrance exam. Seats at the Vellore, Chennai and other VIT campuses are allotted together at VIT counselling in order of VITEEE rank. B.Tech admission is through VITEEE, VIT's own entrance exam, with branch and campus (Vellore, Chennai and others) allotted at VIT counselling in order of rank; seats are not filled through TNEA.
