Overview

The Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun was established in 1932 and is the premier institution for training officer cadets for permanent commission into the Indian Army, producing generations of army officers including several who have gone on to lead the nation’s defence forces.

IMA functions under the Ministry of Defence’s Indian Army training command, and its degree programme for NDA-stream cadets is affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The academy trains cadets from the NDA, Combined Defence Services Examination (CDS) direct entry, and Technical Graduate Course streams over courses ranging from one to three years.

Admission for direct-entry cadets is through the UPSC-conducted Combined Defence Services (CDS) Examination followed by an SSB interview and medical examination; NDA-stream cadets join IMA after completing training at the National Defence Academy.
