Overview
Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) was established in 1951 as the first of the IITs, starting out in the old Hijli Detention Camp building that still stands on campus as a museum. The campus lies in Paschim Medinipur district of West Bengal, about 120 km west of Kolkata, and Kharagpur Junction is one of the busiest railway junctions in eastern India, so the institute is well connected by train.
IIT Kharagpur is an Institute of National Importance placed at NIRF 2025 Engineering rank 5. It has one of the widest spreads of undergraduate programmes of any IIT, with B.Tech and dual-degree options across core engineering, computer science, electronics, and less common fields such as agricultural and food engineering, mining, ocean engineering and naval architecture, and a five-year B.Arch. It also has schools of law, management and medical science. The campus is fully residential, with a large network of halls of residence.
Admission to B.Tech is through JEE Advanced, with seats allotted in JoSAA counselling after candidates first qualify JEE Main. Eligibility
Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics meeting the JoSAA/IIT performance criterion (75%, or 65% for SC/ST/PwD, or top 20 percentile of the board), and qualification in JEE Advanced after clearing JEE Main.
Admission process
Qualify JEE Main, then appear in JEE Advanced; B.Tech seats at IIT Kharagpur are allotted through JoSAA counselling on the JEE Advanced rank. B.Arch candidates must also clear the Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT).
