Overview

Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) was established in 1959 and set up its early academic programmes with support from a consortium of American universities. Its large, green residential campus is at Kalyanpur on the Grand Trunk Road, on the north-western side of Kanpur, and it is one of the few institutes in India with its own airstrip, used for flight research and aeronautics training.

IIT Kanpur is an Institute of National Importance placed at NIRF 2025 Engineering rank 4. It is well known for computer science, electrical and aerospace engineering, and was among the first Indian institutes to teach computer science. B.Tech programmes cover aerospace, biological sciences and bioengineering, chemical, civil, computer science, electrical, materials science, mechanical and more, alongside BS programmes in the sciences and economics. The campus is fully residential.

Admission to B.Tech is through JEE Advanced, with seats allotted in JoSAA counselling after candidates first qualify JEE Main. IIT Kanpur’s CSE seat closes within the top few hundred ranks, so strong candidates should also list its electrical and other branches as backups. Eligibility

Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics meeting the JoSAA/IIT performance criterion (75%, or 65% for SC/ST/PwD, or top 20 percentile of the board), and qualification in JEE Advanced after clearing JEE Main.

Admission process

Qualify JEE Main, then appear in JEE Advanced; B.Tech seats at IIT Kanpur are allotted through JoSAA counselling on the JEE Advanced rank.
