Overview

Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi traces its roots to the Banaras Engineering College, founded in 1919 within Banaras Hindu University. It later became the Institute of Technology, BHU, and was converted into an IIT in 2012. The institute sits inside the large BHU campus in the south of Varanasi, so students share the university’s libraries, hospital and cultural life.

IIT (BHU) is an Institute of National Importance placed at NIRF 2025 Engineering rank 10. It offers B.Tech and integrated dual-degree programmes across computer science, electrical, electronics, mechanical, civil, chemical, ceramic, metallurgical, mining, pharmaceutical engineering, and mathematics and computing, as well as B.Arch. Hostels are provided for undergraduate students.

Admission to B.Tech is through JEE Advanced, with seats allotted in JoSAA counselling after candidates first qualify JEE Main. Eligibility

Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics meeting the JoSAA/IIT performance criterion (75%, or 65% for SC/ST/PwD, or top 20 percentile of the board), and qualification in JEE Advanced after clearing JEE Main.

Admission process

Qualify JEE Main, then appear in JEE Advanced; B.Tech and IDD seats at IIT (BHU) are allotted through JoSAA counselling on the JEE Advanced rank. B.Arch candidates must also clear the Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT).
