Overview

National Institute of Technology Silchar (NIT Silchar) was established in 1967 as the Regional Engineering College, Silchar, and became an NIT in 2002. Its large, green campus is a few kilometres outside Silchar in Assam’s Barak Valley, and Silchar airport has direct flights to Kolkata and Guwahati.

NIT Silchar is an Institute of National Importance placed at NIRF 2025 Engineering rank 50, the highest-ranked NIT in the North-East. B.Tech programmes include computer science, electronics and communication, electrical, electronics and instrumentation, mechanical and civil engineering. Hostels are provided for undergraduate students.

B.Tech seats are filled on JEE Main ranks through JoSAA counselling, with separate Home State (Assam) and Other State quotas. Because it is far from most metros, its closing ranks run later than NITs of similar quality, which can suit students with ranks in the 10,000–13,000 range. Eligibility

Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics (plus Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or a technical vocational subject) meeting the JoSAA 75% (65% for SC/ST/PwD) or top-20-percentile criterion, and a valid JEE Main rank.

Admission process

B.Tech seats are allotted through JoSAA counselling (and CSAB special rounds for vacant seats) on the JEE Main rank, with 50% Home State (Assam) and 50% Other State quotas.
