Overview

National Institute of Technology Rourkela (NIT Rourkela) was established in 1961 as the Regional Engineering College, Rourkela, and became an NIT in 2002. Its large campus lies in the steel city of Rourkela in north-western Odisha, close to the Rourkela Steel Plant, and the city sits on the Howrah–Mumbai rail line.

NIT Rourkela is an Institute of National Importance placed at NIRF 2025 Engineering rank 13. It is one of the larger NITs by campus area and student numbers, with B.Tech and dual-degree programmes in computer science, electronics, electrical, mechanical, chemical, civil, metallurgical and materials, mining, ceramic, biotechnology and more. The campus is fully residential.

B.Tech seats are filled on JEE Main ranks through JoSAA counselling, with separate Home State (Odisha) and Other State quotas. Eligibility

Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics (plus Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or a technical vocational subject) meeting the JoSAA 75% (65% for SC/ST/PwD) or top-20-percentile criterion, and a valid JEE Main rank.

Admission process

B.Tech seats are allotted through JoSAA counselling (and CSAB special rounds for vacant seats) on the JEE Main rank, with 50% Home State (Odisha) and 50% Other State quotas.
