Overview

Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad was founded in 1926 as the Indian School of Mines, set up to train engineers for India’s coal and mineral industries. It became a deemed university in 1967 and was converted into an IIT in 2016. The campus is in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, a city at the centre of India’s largest coalfield, which gives the institute close links with mining and energy companies.

IIT (ISM) is an Institute of National Importance placed at NIRF 2025 Engineering rank 15. Mining engineering, mining machinery, petroleum engineering and applied geology remain its signature programmes, alongside mainstream B.Tech branches such as computer science, electronics and communication, electrical, mechanical, civil and chemical engineering, and mathematics and computing. Hostels are provided for undergraduate students on campus.

Admission to B.Tech is through JEE Advanced, with seats allotted in JoSAA counselling after candidates first qualify JEE Main. Eligibility

Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics meeting the JoSAA/IIT performance criterion (75%, or 65% for SC/ST/PwD, or top 20 percentile of the board), and qualification in JEE Advanced after clearing JEE Main.

Admission process

Qualify JEE Main, then appear in JEE Advanced; B.Tech seats at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad are allotted through JoSAA counselling on the JEE Advanced rank.
