Overview

Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) traces its history to 1847, when the Thomason College of Civil Engineering was founded, making it one of the oldest technical institutions in Asia. It later became the University of Roorkee and was converted into an IIT in 2001. The main campus is in Roorkee, a town in Haridwar district of Uttarakhand, and the institute also runs a campus at Saharanpur.

IIT Roorkee is an Institute of National Importance placed at NIRF 2025 Engineering rank 6. Its long history in civil and water resources engineering remains a strength, and it offers B.Tech programmes across computer science, electrical, electronics, mechanical, chemical, civil, metallurgical, production and industrial, and more, along with B.Arch and integrated M.Tech and M.Sc options. The campus is fully residential.

Admission to B.Tech is through JEE Advanced, with seats allotted in JoSAA counselling after candidates first qualify JEE Main. Eligibility

Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics meeting the JoSAA/IIT performance criterion (75%, or 65% for SC/ST/PwD, or top 20 percentile of the board), and qualification in JEE Advanced after clearing JEE Main.

Admission process

Qualify JEE Main, then appear in JEE Advanced; B.Tech seats at IIT Roorkee are allotted through JoSAA counselling on the JEE Advanced rank. B.Arch candidates must also clear the Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT).
