Overview

Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) opened on 18 July 1949. It was founded by Chinnaswami Rajam and is well known for its aeronautical and automobile engineering departments. The campus is on MIT Road in Radha Nagar, Chromepet, in south-west Chennai, just off GST Road between Pallavaram and Tambaram. Chromepet suburban railway station is a short walk away, and the airport is only a few kilometres north. That makes the college easy to reach from most of southern Chennai.

MIT has been a constituent college of Anna University since 1978. Anna University, a Tamil Nadu state university, awards MIT’s degrees and holds a NAAC A++ grade (2023). MIT is not ranked on its own, but Anna University is ranked 20th in the NIRF 2025 Engineering list. B.E./B.Tech programmes include Aeronautical, Automobile, Computer Science, Electronics and Communication, Electronics and Instrumentation, Information Technology, Production, and Rubber and Plastics Technology. It also runs postgraduate and research programmes, and there are hostels on campus.

Government-quota B.E./B.Tech seats are filled through TNEA single-window counselling, run by the Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE), Tamil Nadu. The merit list is based on Class 12 marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, and there is no entrance exam.
