Overview

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) was set up in 1959 and is among the older IITs in the country. Its green, wooded campus sits on Sardar Patel Road in south Chennai, beside Guindy National Park and within easy reach of Adyar, Guindy and Velachery. The institute is a residential community where undergraduates, postgraduates and research scholars live, study and work on the same campus, a short drive from Chennai’s central railway station and airport.

IIT Madras is an Institute of National Importance that awards its own degrees, and it is ranked No. 1 in the NIRF 2025 Engineering ranking. B.Tech branches include Aerospace, Biological, Chemical, Civil, Computer Science, Electrical, Engineering Physics, Mechanical, Metallurgical and Materials, Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, and Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics. It also runs dual degrees, M.Tech, MS, MBA and PhD programmes, plus an online BS in data science. Undergraduates stay in on-campus hostels.

Admission to B.Tech is through JEE Advanced, with seats allotted in JoSAA counselling; you must first qualify JEE Main to sit JEE Advanced. Eligibility

Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics meeting the JoSAA/IIT performance criterion (75%, or 65% for SC/ST/PwD, or top 20 percentile of the board), and qualification in JEE Advanced after clearing JEE Main.

Admission process

Qualify JEE Main, then appear in JEE Advanced; B.Tech seats at IIT Madras are allotted through JoSAA counselling on the JEE Advanced rank.
